Region Stockholm Intranet
An intranet that creates pride and belonging
Julia led the UI and visual design work to modernize Region Stockholm’s intranet. The project involved extensive agile and user-centered work, largely guided by direct feedback from users within the organization, which was critical to the project’s success and evident after the launch.
The need was to develop a new, modern concept and a more harmonious, user-centered visual experience based on how users wanted to interact with the intranet. Employees across different professional groups and operations at Region Stockholm wanted to individually customize their intranet to suit their environment, operations, and employment type.
In a design-driven process, Julia created a completely new, harmonious, and user-centered experience for the intranet used by about 44,000 employees across various operations of Region Stockholm. She conducted A/B testing and user tests with end-users, ensured accessibility according to WCAG standards, compiled all graphic material in an easily accessible design library, and developed a design manual for the relevant design principles.
Despite tough challenges, Julia successfully led the project to create a modern, efficient, and user-friendly intranet that significantly improved the user experience for Region Stockholm’s employees.

Challenges
User-Centered Design
Balancing the diverse needs and preferences of 44,000 employees across various departments required extensive user research, A/B testing, and user feedback sessions to ensure the design met everyone’s needs.
Accessibility
Ensuring the intranet was accessible according to WCAG standards was a significant challenge. This involved meticulous attention to detail and continuous testing to make sure the platform was usable for all employees, including those with disabilities.
Content Management
Reducing the number of general pages from 12,000 to 1,000 required a strategic approach to content management. Julia had to ensure that the most relevant and useful information was retained and easily accessible.
Personalization
Creating a personalized experience for each user, including custom homepages and tools, required sophisticated design and development efforts to ensure the system could handle individual customizations effectively.
Collaboration
Coordinating with various stakeholders, including the employees, Capgemini, and other partners, required strong project management and communication skills to keep everyone aligned and the project on track.
Key Achievements
Modernization & Innovation
A more personalized intranet was created, reducing the number of general pages from 12,000 to just 1,000. Shared information is now distributed instead of recreated, saving large amounts of data and reducing repetitive work for editors.
Personalization
All navigation is now personalized and individually tailored. Users have their own startpage, the ability to set their own tools, and free spaces for their own links. Ability to Individually customize intranet to the environment operations and employment type.
Improved Clarity & Relevance
Clarity and relevance have been improved through initiatives such as the news feed, which highlights news from the user’s own department. Less relevant, overarching news does not disturb in the same way, and departments can choose to highlight other departments’ news feeds if interested.
Pride and Cohesion
In 2018, a total of 44,000 employees at Region Stockholm were able to access the new, overarching intranet. The project, carried out by Region Stockholm together with Capgemini, won the Optimizely Awards 2018 in the category “Best Intranet”.
